So what is broadband?  The most basic definition for Broadband refers to  a passageway for information to flow.  When home computers and the internet became available to the masses, the only way to connect to the internet was through analog telephone lines on dial-up modems at speeds up to 56 kilobits per second (Kbps).  The lines are “narrowband” and  they transfer data through lines as electrical impulses. When dial-up modem  phone lines are in use with computers you cannot receive a phone call, and downloading music, streaming data, etc., is very slow (and annoying), if not impossible.

So, in the case of transferring data, faster is definitely better. Thus was born DSL and cable internet, aka/broadband. The term “broadband” is essentially as it sounds–a broad or wider bandwidth  that has more room to transfer data with the added benefit of having a faster connection. It is always “on” and doesn’t tie up your telephone line.

To simplify the concept of broadband a bit further, it may help to mention the term “IP address.”  “IP” stands for internet protocol, which is simply a unique identifier like your social security number is a unique identifier. Broadband enables data to be sent across a complex network of servers known as the Worldwide Web (WWW). When you type an internet address into your browser, the information you entered travels from point to point until it reaches the server you desire.

There are several broadband technologies. DSL, which I’ve already mentioned, works through phone lines, but manages a much faster connection than dial-up from technology called a “phone socket filter”  that allows the phone line to be split into two separate signals–one for the phone and one for the internet. As a result data transfers much more quickly. Cable broadband is (obviously) offered by television cable providers who power digital TV and also allow bundling of services that offer cable TV, phone, and internet through box modems that translate signals.

Wireless or “WiFi” is also as it sounds. It picks up wireless signals by changing internet data into radio signals which can be picked up by wireless instruments such as laptops and handhelds.

Broadband satellite  provides a a two-way link from a satellite that you have installed at your home. Data transfer is quite fast and provides a solution to those who live in areas where DSL and cable are not provided. It can be an expensive alternative, but as technology advances broadband satellite will likely become much cheaper in the near future.

The easiest solution would be to make satellite internet providers bring down the prices of their product. Though, saying anything is simple and realistic because you can just find the solution for cheap satellite internet.
